The School of Education offers programs through on-campus, Distance and Flexible Learning and summer school modes.
The School has at the heart of its professional provision the initial education and training of teachers who are seeking degree level qualifications together with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and the in-service education of teachers wishing to upgrade their qualificaltions to degree level, secure an internationally recognised QTS, or take specialist Certificates or Diplomas within particular areas like Counselling and Guidance, English as a Second Language, Educational Administration, Early Childhood Education, Music as an Expressive Art, or Special and Diverse Educational Needs. It is also possible for students to take as part of a BA an Education major, minor or electives, thus treating Education as a broadly-based liberal subject detached from any expectation that they might become teachers.
The School offers programs in Applied Psychology either as a single major or as a double major combined with appropriate courses offered by other Schools. The Applied Psychology major is available in a Community and Health Psychology strand, an Education strand and a Counselling strand.
The School is also seeking to develop its postgraduate offerings, allowing qualified experienced teachers already in possession of degrees to secure either a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, by four 400-level courses, which can then be topped up to an MA in Education by completing a thesis. The School also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Psychology, which can similarly form the foundation for an MA. However, until further notice no new students will be admitted into this program. Beyond the MA, suitable students are encouraged to pursue further qualifications by research right up to doctoral level. The School has competence to supervise high-level research within virtually all the major areas of Education and Psychology.
